Begin With the Size and Setting
Send the desired length, depth and thickness, photographs of the fireplace, your city and the look you want. Include the fireplace manufacturer’s installation requirements and required clearances if available. Those requirements must be addressed before choosing the final dimensions and installation location.
Rustic, Live-Edge or Refined
A live edge and visible grain can preserve the character of the timber. A squared profile and smoother surface create a more refined appearance. Discuss the shape, edge treatment, sanding and finish together. Each board or beam is different; photographs and inspiration help explain the style you have in mind.
Wood Species and Material Availability
Species affects color, grain and the material available for the size you need. Tell Steven your preference and discuss suitable options before committing to a particular piece. Customer-supplied logs may be considered when their dimensions and condition suit the project; not every log will yield suitable mantel stock.
Green Versus Dried Material
Freshly milled material contains moisture and can shrink, check, crack or change shape as it dries. Thick mantel stock needs particular consideration. Sanding or sealing green wood does not eliminate movement or guarantee a straight, crack-free beam.
Dried material, moisture condition, intended use and your tolerance for natural character should be discussed before quoting. Drying can affect the schedule substantially. Liberty Woodworks’ solar kiln is still under construction; ask about the appropriate material and drying path for your project rather than assuming immediate kiln-drying availability.
Finish and Installation Planning
Discuss natural color versus stain, surface texture and finish options. Provide information about the wall and intended support method. Mounting, weight and fireplace clearances need to be resolved for the specific setting; a mantel quote should not be assumed to include installation unless that is expressly agreed.
